An Outstanding and Imposing James I Oak Armchair

The panel back, with an arcaded arch supported on strapwork carved columns, below a simple scrolled cresting rail, flanked by the original turned finials. The original boarded seat is secured to the shaped seat rails by short oak pegs.

The shaped arms rest on very well-turned baluster supports, which continue down below the seat as an inverted baluster to form the legs, joined by substantial moulded stretchers. The chair has a wonderful deep “rake” to the back, suggesting it was made for a little more comfort than most.

Colour, surface and condition are totally exceptional.

English, Gloucestershire/West Country circa 1620.

Height 45.5 inches, depth 25 inches, width 24 inches.

Ref 2367
